All-weather Power Off-Grid Hybrid Project
Challenge
Tough climate and terrain challenge this remote fully zero-emissions off-grid residence in Western Canada. The hybrid intermittent PV (photovoltaic) and short-duration battery power need resilient, weatherproof backup power.
Solution
The GenCell G5 offers a complementary, stand-alone, pre-packaged energy solution to balance intermittent renewable power sources with reliable energy storage that withstands sub-zero winter weather - delivering ultra-reliable, weatherproof, zero-emission power for a 32kW PV and battery powered off-grid demonstration project at a hyper-high performance residence.
Benefits
Automatically kicking in and charging the system at a pre-set battery capacity in sunlight-deficient winter, the G5 delivers resilience in the face of severe weather.

DC Auxiliary PowerEXTENDS SUBSTATIONS
Challenge
Facing earthquakes and wildfires, a utility in California requires seismic-compliant backup for batteries to extend substation breaker controls from eight to over forty hours.
Solution
Three units of G5rx tested and found compliant with the IEEE 693 seismic equipment standard deployed at substations. Units provide clean and regulated output voltage with low total harmonic distortion (THD) and ripples for both linear and non-linear loads and maintains on-line operation with short switching time. The Remote IoT Manager software that monitors operations and performance met strictest cybersecurity standards within the IEC 62443-3-2 and 3-3 framework.
Benefits
Eliminating pollutant and maintenance-intens.ive diesel generators, G5rx extends backup duration beyond batteries, ensuring peace of mind for maintenance engineering teams and allowing utility to restore customer satisfaction far more rapidly and safely than before.

Tier One Operator Southeast Asia
Challenge
Frequent long outages caused frequent tower equipment shutdowns in remote areas. Customer had unsuccessful past experience with methanol fuel cell solutions and sought a fuel cell capable of quickly offtaking load from the batteries.
Solution
Long-duration UPS backup based on AFC technology with 6 industrial hydrogen cylinders provides up to 16h of back-up on-site (for 3kW equipment) in outdoor deployment.
Benefits
Continuous smooth tower operation during outages; immediate kick-in; ample time for refills & multiple H2 suppliers facilitates fuel supply; reduced number of batteries on site from 12 to 4.

Government-owned UtilityLATIN AMERICA
Challenge
Subject to the varying weather conditions and natural disasters that affect the country such as violent earthquakes, outdoor equipment including transmission towers and poles incur weather-related damage and electricity service interruptions impact customers.
Solution
Following a three-month internal testing and certification process, this utility, the largest in the world, initially deployed one G5 to back up a BTS for emergency intracompany communications and a second 125 VDC unit at a different substation to back up auto-reclosure functionality. During field testing an 0.30 PGA earthquake occurred. While others incurred damages and outages, these two substations were the only sites that continued to operate throughout the quake.
Benefits
In Fall 2018 real-time data collected from the units deployed and under trial demonstrated that the system prevented direct and indirect losses and achieved positive ROI.

Tier One Operator CENTRAL EUROPE
Challenge
Existing backup solutions support only up to two hours during power outages occurring outside of city center locations.
Solution
Long-duration UPS based on AFC technology with 12 industrial hydrogen cylinder bundle provides up to 32h backup on-site supporting 4G and 5G services.
Benefits
Long backup duration allows customer continuous smooth tower operation with ample time for fuel refill as needed; smooth and reliable operation during severe winter conditions of -4⁰C.

Emergency BackupINSIDE BOMB SHELTER
Challenge
In a sensitive border location, a regional council needed a safe, quiet & fumeless source of backup power that could be installed inside its bomb shelter to maintain critical communications and key operations as well as for life-saving power for emergency services.
Solution
The silent, emission-free GenCell G5 was installed to backup power for the emergency command and control center inside a unique bomb shelter that withstands missile strikes. Twelve standard hydrogen cylinders provide fuel for 48 hours of backup power.
Benefits
Reliable operation of computer monitors, computers, lights, communication and air-conditioning unit ensures public calm and safety.
