The Green Power Opportunity for 5G Operators
Green Power for 5G: With the 5G revolution upon us, there’s no doubt that ultra-reliable, super-fast Internet data can have a significant impact on a number of industries – whether by taking existing markets to the next-level, such as autonomous vehicles, or by opening up entirely new opportunities such as for machine-to-machine IoT applications.
For mobile network operators (MNOs), however, the reality is that the rollout of 5G presents a number of major challenges, which will require huge sums of investment. None moreso than on energy, the highest of all operating expenses (OPEX) for telecom businesses today. Presently, energy expenditure on 4G is estimated to be around 30% of all OPEX for MNOs, while the deployment of 5G is expected to double that cost. Coupled with continued worldwide pressure to ‘go green’ and to reduce our carbon footprint, more and more MNOs are looking towards green power as the answer to their energy problems.
Rami Reshef, CEO of leading fuel cell manufacturer GenCell Energy, provides his insight on how green energy solutions such as wind, solar and fuel cells can all play a key role in helping MNOs to significantly reduce their OPEX and increase sustainability, as well as supporting the grid to meet the power-hungry demands of 5G and make the network more reliable.
