THEnergy Report: Telecom operators today can reach sustainability, cost and resilience power goals with hydrogen and ammonia
As the main annual telecom event MWC Barcelona draws closer, we revisit the potential of hydrogen and ammonia-fueled solutions to serve the power needs of telecom operators, whether to deliver off-grid power to remote telecom towers in distant locations where the grid is unstable or to supply backup and supplement peak power in dense urban networks where pollutant diesel fuel is increasingly being banned. To get an objective view, we partnered with THEnergy, a specialized business consultancy that focuses on innovation in the energy sector to prepare an up-to-date report on the value of hydrogen and ammonia-fueled power solutions for the telecom industry.
Writes Dr. Thomas Hillig, Managing Director of THEnergy: “The technology to ditch dirty diesel at remote telecom sites exists: it is time to act now.”
The new report illustrates why the time has come to replace diesel gensets by leading-edge fuel cells at remote telecom sites such as telecom towers. Telecom companies are facing challenges due to the war in Ukraine leading to high energy prices and the need to cut carbon emissions. They are transitioning to renewables and battery storage, but many still rely on diesel generators. Hydrogen fuel cells offer an alternative solution as they are more efficient and cost-competitive than diesel, and can withstand extreme weather. GenCell has enhanced alkaline fuel cell technology for remote stationary use and added an ammonia cracker for easy hydrogen generation. Successful field tests by Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Neyðarlínan ohf in Iceland carried out in 2022 prove the technology’s viability. The shift to fuel cells will make telecom companies more progressive and environmentally conscious. Offering green, affordable power solutions ideal for telecom towers in poor and off-grid locations, GenCell invites operators to partner for a clean energy future.
GenCell’s telecom experts will be on-hand at MWC in Meeting Room 3G2ex to meet with MNOs and tower managers to accept pre-orders for the sustainable, cost-effective and resilient GenCell FOX off-grid power solution.
This new THEnergy report was well-received and you can find coverage in English in Energy News, FuelCellsWorks, Hydrogen Central, and in Africa Business Communities, as well as in German in PV Magazine DE, Windkraft Journal DE and in Spanish in Hidrogeno Verde.
