Back in 2021, McKinsey & Company said, “Hydrogen fuel cells have the potential to revolutionize energy systems by enabling zero-emission power for stationary, portable, and mobile applications.” And in 2025, AP News reported on “a town in Napa Valley that shifted from diesel generators to hydrogen fuel cell and battery backup, providing up to 48 hours of clean energy during power line shutdowns.”
The paper reviews key fuel cell types, such as PEMFC systems known for fast startup and mobility applications, SOFC systems valued for high-efficiency stationary power and others. Surveying the different colors of hydrogen determined by production pathways, it explores hydrogen electrolysis and green hydrogen production as enablers of sustainable energy supply chains, alongside safe storage and distribution considerations.

Their modular design supports flexible sizing, making them suitable for both small distributed systems and large-scale energy needs.
Accelerated electrification—particularly for EV fleet charging, digital infrastructure expansion, and industrial electrification— alongside growing demand for backup power driven by extreme weather events, places increasing stress on conventional grid infrastructure. creating new opportunities for fuel cells.
